We Work Hard For The Money

We as football fans are privileged. We're in an era in which the technical and physical ability of footballers has never been higher. On any given weekend we can choose to watch the fast and furious Premier League blessed with the talents of Cesc Fabregas and Gareth Bale. We could switch over to La Liga and catch Leo Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo in full-flight, terrorizing opponents and opposing supporters alike. Perhaps we could watch the Bundesliga, and catch a glimpse of one of several wonderkids (Marin, Kroos) or timeless veterans? How about the Serie A, a defensively-sound but highly skilled league?

We are indeed in a special time. There is so much good football on display, and that's down to a host of brilliant players. While the technical abilities and mental attributes displayed are second to none, still, one type of player still exists which draws much debate: the hard man. Also known as an enforcer, destroyer, or just all-round nutter, these players are renowned for one thing and one thing only...intimidation mixed with a bit of lunacy.
