Money Laundering Conviction
Cloth nappies are given rather a bad press. It is a commonly held conviction that they are less effective at containing liquids and solids, they are more likely to cause nappy rash, they will be uncomfortable for your baby compared with disposables, and that the laundering and care of the nappies will be an onerous and expensive task.
Real nappies are no more likely to leak
Anyone who has looked after young babies will know that all nappies leak from time to time. It is widely believed that top brand disposables are the most reliable, and that parents choosing cloth nappies can expect more soggy and soiled clothes and bedsheets. However, this is often not the case.
Nappies may leak due to poor fit, sheer volume of solid waste, or because the absorbent material is saturated. Many modern cloth nappies have an outer wrap which provides an extra line of defence against leaks, and elasticated waist bands are usually much more robust in reusable nappies. As a result, many reusable nappies are actually less likely to leak than their disposable counterparts.
When considering leakage due to saturation, cloth nappies become saturated more quickly than disposables because they do not contain super absorbers. This means they must be changed more regularly to avoid accidents, but regular changing is simply good husbandry.
Cloth diapers don't really cause nappy rash
Nappy rash is common amongst infants wearing any type of nappy. It is caused by wetness and contact with urine and faeces. Many people believe that nappy rash is more likely to occur when using real nappies; and some disposable nappy manufacturers even claim their products help prevent nappy rash. In fact, an independent study found no significant relationship between type of nappy used and incidence of nappy rash (Phillip et al, 1997). The best way to avoid the development of nappy rash is to change nappies regularly and use a barrier cream.
Disposable nappies and the environment
It is widely accepted that modern disposable nappies are an environmental disaster. According to the Real Nappy Campaign, 3 billion disposable nappies are generated in the UK per year, of which 90% end up in landfill.
Disposable nappies consist of the super absorber sodium polyacrylate together with polypropene and other plastics and adhesives, most of which come from unsustainable sources such as crude oil, and will take hundreds of years to degrade in landfill. However despite these well-known facts, most parents still choose to use disposable nappies.
