One way to teach kids about money is to encourage them to earn their own and then manage their earnings. Before they are old enough to work legally outside the home, here are some ideas for children to make money, especially during breaks from school.

Pet-loving and responsible kids can make a bundle in the summer by caring for pets while their owners are away on vacation. Boarding dogs and cats is expensive and may upset pets who prefer to remain at home. Both factors make paying a kid $5 to $10 a day to care for a cat, dog, or other pet fairly reasonable.
Youth who want to establish their credentials as a great pet sitter should have a list of references (if it’s their first job, get a letter from a teacher or coach) and place eye-catching flyers around town. Once hired, kids can develop a standard form to collect pertinent information from the pet owner, such as a phone number where they can be reached while away, how much and at what time the pet eats, how frequently a dog should be walked, what to do with animal waste, and a phone number for their veterinarian.
