The lyrics of the song “Money” by the classic rock band Pink Floyd read: “Money, so they say, is the root of all evil today.” Similarly, the lyrics of the song “For the Love of Money” by the O’Jays, a rhythm and blues group, say: “I know that money is the root of all evil.” The lyrics of popular music filter into the psyche of many Americans who conclude that money is evil. It is a misconception, which may be traced back to a misreading of the Bible.

The Necessity of Money for Living

Nowhere in the Scriptures does it say that money is evil. Money in itself is not wrong. It is morally neutral, neither good nor bad. Money, as a means to an end of purchasing material goods, is a precondition to a meaningful life. Since humans are body-spirit entities, they need money to purchase material goods in order to live.

In other words, a human being needs things in order to have a decent human life. It is not befitting of human dignity, an honorable human life, to lack the means of purchasing the basic necessities of life, such as food, clothing and shelter. One must be able to maintain a certain standard of living, that is, make enough money, to “pay the bills every month.” In fact, it is a source of stress, an emotional or spiritual burden, not to be able to meet one’s monthly expenses.
