There is a poster displayed in British Post Offices which declares that 4 out of 10 people are paying the wrong price to send parcels. Information about how to send objects bigger than a standard letter is complex and can be difficult to find.

How Much Will it Cost to Post a Parcel?

Larger items, which the public consider to be parcels, can be described as packets and sent by 1st and 2nd class post from any post office, by Royal Mail, the prices are detailed below. Packets will include most packages containing gifts. This postal service offers the following advantages:

  • postage will be cheaper than parcel rates for items weighing up to 1kg
  • recorded delivery can be purchased for an extra 75p
  • special delivery is possible (next day, tracked, compensation)
  • apacket can be any weight but the maximum dimensions for a packet are 61 x 46 x 46 cm

Packet: Cheap Parcel Delivery Service with Tracking?

When the weight exceeds 1 kg, the object can be sent as a packet or a parcel with Royal Mail. A parcel is cheaper but the journey may take longer and the extras of recorded or special delivery are not available. The Royal Mail carry parcels weighing up to 20 kg, the price for parcels weighing above 10 kg is between £14.69 and £18.19. The difference depends on the level of compensation required if the parcel is lost of damaged (up to £500 compensation is available).
