In life, everyone wants to be successful, whether they are a high school student, a renowned chef, or a budding entrepreneur. People toil day after day to achieve their goals- graduating high school, going to college, getting a good job, making lots of money, having a family, retiring comfortably after being too old to work, and many other goals in between.

However, to be perfectly honest, none of us have ever gone through without cheating at least once in our lives. Sure, it might have been something as innocent as taking extra money from the bank while playing Monopoly, using a few cheat codes to beat the new Halo video game, or getting away with an illegal play in little league, but no matter what or who you cheated on, from spouses to taxes and video games, it’s still wrong.

Keeping Up With the Rest of Society

Cheating, by definition of Dictionary.com, is “To deceive by trickery swindle, mislead, fool, elude; to be unfaithful to a lover.” A 2002 Rutgers Survey participant, Alice Newhall put it best when describing the widely accepted theory behind cheating saying that, “What’s important is getting ahead. The better grades you have the better school you get into, the better you’re going to do in life. And if you learn to cut corners to do that, you’re going to save yourself time and energy. In the real world, that’s what’s going to be going on. The better you do, that’s what shows. It’s not how moral you were in getting there.” The quote is definitely true in the sense that society rewards people for self efficiency and quality of work, not honesty and integrity. After all, we live in a world where instant gratification and high speed everything dominates our entire culture. Therefore, in this fast paced world peer pressure, jealousy, and pure lack of time have been used to justify cheating and its fatal spread across society.
